Nowadays everyone is using either Snapchat, Instagram, or both. Two different social media platforms, yet very similar in some ways.
"Stories" have been brought to life since Snapchat's existence and has very recently made an appearance Instagram. Which one is better for you and your content?
The Difference
Snapchat lets you share your content through a single track called a story, which is made up of 24 hours’ worth of image or video snaps that you’ve shared for others to see. Once a snap is 24 hours old, users can no longer view it unless you reshare it as it automatically deletes itself.
Instagram, on the other hand, lets you share content through two tracks: the stories and the feed. Your feed is permanent and stays on your page collected with other pictures, whereas your stories only have a 24-hour life.
By combining the permanency of your feed posts with the 24-hour duration of your stories, you can generate urgency while providing consistent and engaging content for your Instagram followers.
The Filters
Both apps provide filters that you can apply to your images and videos in both stories. Snapchat seems to have the upper hand on this one.
Snapchat has what are called Geofilters, location-based filters that frame your image or video snaps with branding and themes. Large organizations tend to sponsor geofilters on a larger scale, such as national holidays, however you can personally design and submit a community geofilter to Snapchat that highlights a local event or date. Instagram doesn't have geofilters, only a sticker that lets you add your current location in writing. (i.e. Philadelphia, PA)
Snapchat also has filters to change the look of an image or video, like black and white, for example. Instagram has filters like this as well.
Perhaps the filters Snapchat is most-known for is the face-mapping and motion filters they have. By pressing on your face, endless silly or cute filters pop-up that alter your face and even your voice, if you make a video. (You know you love that dog filter!)
Motion filters are another specialty that Snapchat contains, letting you turn your videos into slow-motion, fast-motion, or reserve-motion.
Conclusion
There are other differences between Instagram and Snapchat stories, however the differences listed above can help determine which platform works best for your content, goals, and brand. You may even choose to use both for different reasons and in different ways; it's all up to you and what you want in the end.
Symantha,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this post. I don't put up stories on Instagram ever, so it was interesting to see what the differences were between Snapchat. I guess I don't think of Instagram as a place where you go to post a story, but I recently began watching some Insta stories of specific people that I follow. I would argue that Snapchat is the better place to post stories because of all the effects you can use such as slow-mo and all the other filters you mentioned. Very insightful post!
